Auld Lang Syne by Kathleen McGuire

Score and parts

SATB choir, tin whistle and guitar.  c.5'00
Auld Lang Syne is a traditional, Scottish poem that was adapted by Robert Burns in 1788. In English, a literal translation is “old long since,” or more colloquially: “long, long ago” or “days of long ago.” For hundreds of years, the poem has been set to a traditional folk song, of which there are many variations. The tune used here - the original, pentatonic melody Burns chose to set with the poem - is nowadays less familiar than the modern tune that is most commonly heard sung by revellers in many countries at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve. Burns, when he presented the song to the British Museum, remarked: "The following song, an old song, of the olden times, and which has never been in print, nor even in manuscript until I took it down from an old man's singing, is enough to recommend any air." The original folk song to which it was set was known as: "I fee'd a lad at Michaelmas.”

Immortality by Kathleen McGuire

Score

SATB choir and piano.  c.400
Based on the poem "Music" by Juhan Liiv (1864-1913).  The English version of “Muusika”, from Snow Drifts, I Sing: Selected Poems edited by Jüri Talvet, was translated from Estonian by Jüri Talvet and H. L. Hix (Guernica Editions, 2013). The translators kindly permitted use of the poem for “Immortality,” citing Liiv’s own tragic ending: “Juhan Liiv was a peasant, and the circumstances of his death were unfortunate. This work is a memorial to Gareth Chan (1969-2016), the beloved pianist for the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Choir (SGLC), who died tragically at a very young age.

Magnificat - Song of Mary by Kathleen McGuire

Score

For women's voices and piano, c.5'15
"When revisiting the work in 2016 for publication, I discovered that my mature feminist sensibilities were now offended by the conservative 1662 language. After toying with the idea of a modern re-write of the text, in the end I decided to leave the words as per the original. The one exception is in bar 25 where I change “lowliness” to “humbleness.” I invite performers to sing the 1662 English but apply contemporary context, moving beyond a literal interpretation.
The work ebbs and flows between consonance and dissonance, reflecting the drama of the Canticle. Some of the intervals and rhythms may challenge inexperienced singers; aural cues from the piano part and canonic patterns that move from one vocal part to another will help singers to find their way when learning their parts." Ordinary Mass in English by Kathleen McGuire

Score

SATB (with piano/organ optional).  c.4'15
This short mass setting is designed for choir use in a regular communion service (Eucharist). It is particularly suitable for Lent because it contains no Gloria.  The four movements - Kyrie Eleison; Sanctus; Benedictus and Agnus Dei  are most often sung nowadays, omitted is the traditional Creed and the Lord’s Prayer. Each movement is deliberately short in order to enhance the flow of worship in today’s modern world, while keeping with the tradition of choral responses. It is most likely unsuitable for congregational singing, due to the complexity of the vocal lines.
The four-movement setting is also suitable as a stand-alone concert piece.

Prelude and Phantasy by Kathleen McGuire

Score

For solo guitar, c.5'00
The flamboyant two movements should contrast significantly, with the first being very relaxed rhythmically.  In the Prelude, the listener’s attention should be drawn to the melody while harmonies are sustained underneath. The Phantasy, however, should be rhythmically precise and build steadily to the dramatic coda section
