Andrew Chubb

Born in Sydney in 1975, Andrew Chubb is a Newcastle based pianist, composer, violinist, violist, conductor and teacher. In 1999, he joined the staff of the University of Newcastle Conservatorium of Music were he has been a lecturer and teacher in Piano, Academic Studies (Harmony, Aural, Musicology and Orchestration) Violin, Viola and is the Director of the Music Craft, Musicianship and Theory Non-Tertiary courses. He is also a conductor and currently works with the Hunter Strings ensembles at the Newcastle Conservatorium. Since 2001, he has been a part time teacher at the Upper Hunter Conservatorium of Music.
He is a highly respected teacher in many fields and has taught many successful students from beginner to Tertiary and AMEB Diploma level and has student achievements including involvement with Youth Music Australia Programs such as Young Symphonists, National Music Camp, Sydney Sinfonia, Australian Youth Orchestra, Sydney Youth Orchestra and the SBS Youth Orchestra.
Andrew Chubb has an Honours Degree in music performance and research from the University of Newcastle. He specialised in piano performance studying under Carmel Lutton OAM and research into the Fantasias of Mozart with Dr Rosalind Halton. His research included a new competition / performing version for Mozart's unfinished Fantasia in D minor K.397. He gained his Bachelor of Music Degree prior to that in 1998 majoring in both piano and viola, studying with Dr Deborah Lander in viola and Carmel Lutton OAM in piano and was a composition student in classes lectured by Nigel Butterley and Christian Heim. Before undertaking tertiary studies, he had already gained the L.Mus.A., L.T.C.L. and A.Mus.A. in piano and the A.Mus.A. in violin and later, viola.
In recent years, Andrew Chubb has devoted time to composition and has had works published by Publications by Wirripang (www.australiancomposers.com.au). He is currently working on various projects including a set of Etudes for piano and many smaller scale piano works for children.
He also frequently plays the viola and violin in various chamber and orchestral concerts. He has often appeared as principal viola for orchestras such as the Hunter Sinfonia, Opera Hunter Orchestra, Lake Macquarie Orchestra, Newcastle Festival Opera Orchestra and the Eastern Sydney Chamber Orchestra. He appears as solo violist on Australian composer Christian Heim’s CD Prayer Dances (‘Move’ label) in collaboration with the Sydney Chamber Choir and solo violinist in Russell Thornton’s score for the recently produced short film; Touched by Fellini. He is now one of the Directors on the board of newly formed Newcastle Festival Opera and is assisting the company in many ways including one of its prime objectives to provide further exciting opportunities for Newcastle based orchestral musicians.
As a pianist, Andrew Chubb is interested in a variety of repertoire although he has taken a keen interest in performing minimalist piano works, especially those of the American composer Philip Glass. By 2006, it appears he was the first and only Australian pianist who had publicly performed the main cycle of published solo piano works by Glass. These highly successful concerts were given at the superlative Newcastle Conservatorium Concert Hall in 2002, 2003 and 2006.
