FRANK MILLWARD
After receiving his BA in
performance from the Queensland Conservatorium, Millward completed an MA in music
composition at the City University of New York in 1981, studying computer music
composition with Myron Fink, Ruth Anderson and Charles Dodge. Moving to London in
1982 he took up the position of composer in residence with Lumiere and Son Theatre Company
writing scores and musically directing a number of works. One of these works, Brightside,
an electro - acoustic - experimental - dance - theatre piece, won the Perrier Award
at the Edinburgh Festival in 1986.
Returning to Australia in 1987 he worked as a freelance musical director (keyboards),
composer and producer, producing and/or composing projects for the Queensland Symphony,
Melbourne Theatre Co, La Boite Theatre Co, TN Theatre Co, ABC TV, SBS TV, RooArt Records,
EMI and Warner Chappel Publishing as well as working with a number of acts, among them
Michael Hutchence, Ollie Olsen, Grace Knight and Cleopatra Wong. During this time he
graduated with a PhD from the Queensland University.
Since 1991 he has been a lecturer in composition, jazz, popular music and music technology
at various universities. While continuing to receive commissions for new works, he has
also written, arranged and/or played on a number of documentary film scores for the ABC,
BBC, Channel 4 and independent producers in Australia and the U.K.
Since 1998 he has composed and musically directed a number of site-specific works for
major U.K. festivals including: Dining With Alice and The Perfect Day.
This follows on from his highly innovative performance piece, timelines
for DJ and orchestra. He currently lectures in Music and Mixed Media Performance at
Kingston University, London.
Much of his current research explores cross-disciplinary relationships between technology,
science and art where focus is given to the ways that sound and moving image are shaping
new interactive forms in live performance.
