Piotr (Peter) Nowotnik is a Melbourne-based music producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist. Originally a guitarist, Peter's eclectic musical tastes have led him to take up a diverse array of world instruments and exploration of music from around the world.
His compositional studies in the Victorian College of the Arts allowed him to diversify his techniques with inflections of contemporary art music and reiterate his earlier neo-romantic inspirations. Peter was a student of Mark Pollard, David Kramand and Andrian Pertout. Composers such as Oliver Messiaen, Peter Sculthorpe, Charles Ives or Mikotaj Gorecki belong to his favourite XX-century inspirations.
In addition to composing and performing with the world music band he established during the period of 2003-2007 - Umanee - he is also known for actively working on soundtracks for independent cinematography, theatre and cross-disciplinary art projects. Visit www.pmnmusic.com
Side by side with his contemporary compositions, he is actively drawing from a world's cultrual heritage to create modern aesthetic for traditional music. His recent album Moonrise is a testimony to ancient tradition of storytelling, mythology and the heritage of forgotten instruments embedded in a contemporary form.
