Ruth Lee Martin

Ruth Lee Martin is a Scottish-born composer, researcher and writer living in Canberra.
The connection between the physicality of place, and imagined, constructed place, and the way in which these things can be expressed through the medium of music is something that continues to fascinate her. Gaelic folk music inspires much of her compositional output.
Music she has composed specific to the Canberra landscape includes Brindabella Blues for clarinet quartet; … and the Burnished Earth Shimmers for chinese lute (ruan); House on the Hill for string quartet, percussion and dijeridu (commissioned by the House of Parliament).
She is currently composing music for a ten-part web series, 'No Strings Attached', funded by the ABC, NBCU (U.S.), Film Victoria, and Screen Australia.
She wrote the original music for web series 'Tales from Tinder'. This series was awarded Best Original Concept, New York Web Fest; Best for Originality, Bilboa Web Fest (Spain); Best Official Selection, Raindance Web Fest (London); Award Winner, Web Fest (Berlin); Best Official Selection, Bush Wick Film Festival (New York), 2015.
Ruth is also a researcher and has published many journal articles on topics ranging from the relationship between music and cultural geography and women in music. An academic book on Gaelic songs of Australia is in final draft form.
