STEPHEN YATES
Newcastle born, Stephen studied violin and piano at the
local Conservatorium and composition independently with Anthony Brennan. After
moving to Sydney in 1980 he continued his studies with Martin Wesley-Smith at the New
South Wales Conservatorium of Music.
Although he has written for theatre, dance and marionettes,
Stephen's greatest love continues to be the writing for small ensembles, solo
instrumentalists, especially the voice and harpsichord. In 1994 Stephen was elected
as one of the six finalists in the prestigious "Alienor Composition Awards" held
in Atlanta, USA and that prize winning work has been recorded by the distinguished
American harpsichordist, Elaine Funaro, on the US label Gasparo, GSCD-331 (1997).
A number of his works have been published by Currency Press
(Sydney), Calisto Press (UK) and more recently Allans Music who selected "Movements"
to be included in their revised Violin 7th Grade Publication (2000).
Over the years his works has been performed, broadcast and
recorded in Australia, United Kingdom, United States, Europe, South East Asia and China
In
2008 he was commissioned by the Sydney Conservatorium of Music to write Jubilate,
and was given its premiere in Beijing as part of the pre-Olympic music festival, the
Musichalon.
