Steve Clark

Steve Clark was born in Sydney, Australia in 1978. He graduated from the University of Western Sydney with a Bachelor of Arts (Music) (First Class Honours) in 2000, and is currently in the final stages of his PhD in Creative Arts. His compositional teachers have included Bruce Crossman, Ian Shanahan, Andrée Greenwell and Andrew Peachey.

In 1999 he won the inaugural Young Composer award at the Sydney Spring Festival of New Music for his composition ‘Prelude to a Postlude’ for violin and piano. He has also had his piece ‘Phryg Magnet’ included on the CD compilation titled ‘Auburn Splendor’ which was released in 2000 and features music from Australian and American composers. In 2001 Steve was awarded a scholarship by the University of Western Sydney to undertake his PhD in Creative Arts. His music has also been performed at a number of conferences including War, Creativity and Communication: An Australian Perspective on East Timor and Surrounding Issues (2003) and Intercultural Creativity (2004).

Steve has tutored both composition and music, craft and theory at the University of Western Sydney. His work as music educator brings him in contact with seven different schools where he is a conductor, piano teacher and flute teacher.

His compositions attempt to reconcile many of his diverse musical and non-musical interests and experiences. Using a compositional language that draws on aspects of both tonality and atonality, Steve’s music often deals with astronomy, both as inspiration and as material within the composition itself. Many of his compositions have been written for beginner or intermediate performers, while others have been written for ensembles that include both advanced or virtuosic performers as well as beginner performers.
