Orchestral, c.11- 12 mins This linear structure begins with murky material, as the light of dusk can be when Night has not fully fallen. Clearer material and musical layers, including melodic lines in the oboes and clarinets as well as a rhythmically driven bass line in the bassoons, tuba and contrabasses, replace this murkiness gradually. Quartertones appear incorporated into Harmonic Fields as the work progresses. These are placed on top of each other during the middle section with mostly Brass emphasising one while mostly Strings and Woodwinds the other. These accumulate in intensity to a climactic point. Two movemtns - con espressione, c.6'00 and vivace, c.8'00. Commissioned by Rev Dr Arthur Bridge on behalf of Ars Musica Australis. Premiere performance to be held in July 2010 by the Wollongong Symphony Orchestra ISMN 9790720101941
This piece is part of a trio of works that use similar musical elements to emphasise various representations of Night. Die Nacht kommt conveys imagery of a Hazy and Foggy Night and achieves this through blurred voicing and “out-of-phase” melodic lines and quartertonal scales. Artificial string harmonics and resonant metallic percussion opens the work accompanied at first by Violas and later Oboes and muted Trumpets. c. 9-10 mins. Grade - professional ISMN M720065984

SSA and school orchestra, c.7'0 My Cathedral - sheet music
This concerto for piano and orchestra was composed in 1991 and commissioned by Sally Mays a well known Australian pianist from Melbhourne who has spent most of her life in London. Included in the large orchestra is a bass clarinet (which imitates the sound of the didjeridu) and clapstick which are intended to give a tone conour that emphasises the aboriginal origin of the melodies used in the slow movement and last movement.
