String Quartet in three movements, c.12'40
The music is written especially for competent, non-professional, performers who may wish to engage with contemporary styles of music and who may want to explore music for string quartet that goes beyond that of the traditional repertoire.
The pitch material is based largely on modal resources and is, for the most part, quite straightforward throughout. The main challenge for performers lies within the areas of rhythm and in the precision of the rhythmic interplay between all instruments in the ensemble. In each movement, the music often takes the form of a ‘conversation’ between the instruments, with everyone in the ensemble contributing important melodic elements to the overall texture at various times.

String Quartet, c.4'00
The surging 11/8 rhythm dominates the work and propels the music along, while the melodic lines, in their sinuous way, try to reflect the original meaning of the Aboriginal word, Tallawarra - "slippery place".
Tallawarra was commissioned by Musica Viva Australia as part of the "Australian Miniatures" Project for Musica Viva Australia?s International Series in 2000.

Under Sydney Skies (On Crests of Waves)
By John Peterson
Regular price
$70.00
The use compound meter (12/8) and additive meter (13/8) throughout the piece is typical of the composer's compositional style and, in this work, creates a gentle rhythmic lilt that represents the motion of the waves on the harbour; while the sometimes wistful melodies attempt to evoke the beauty of both the natural (the water, the Botanic Gardens) and the urban (the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Sydney Opera House) elements that combine to make this city such a memorable place.
This work was commissioned for the International Mandolin Festival Sydney 2008.

SATB Choir Unaccompanied, c.5'45
Veni Creator Spiritus is a short unaccompanied choral setting of the text attributed to Rabanus Maurus (d. 856). The work begins with a free arrangement based on the plainchant melody originally associated with the text, written in a rather traditional musical style, followed by music that features a quite different stylistic approach, and which also makes use of the text in quite different ways. The latter part of the piece makes extensive use of additive rhythmic structures, and regular changes of metre, in attempt to turn the setting into one that is essentially celebratory and rhythmically-exciting.
