Awakening

By Tony Wheeler

Regular price $25.00 Sale

Bb clarinet (with optional cello) and piano, c.4'45. Medium level of difficulty.

This pieces utilises the wide ranges and rich timbres of the bass clarinet and the Bb clarinet. The writing is strongly melodic throughout, integrated with harmonic material which ranges from mildly dissonant to decidedly diatonic. The transition in harmonic material can be seen in some ways to reflect the title of the piece, representing perhaps a transformation from clouds and mist to clear, blue skies and sunlight.

Bus Ticket Variations

By Tony Wheeler

Regular price $15.00 Sale

Piano solo, c.5'00.  Grade 8 - Certificate of Performance

The theme for this set of variations was composed using a series of numbers on bus tickets.  The tickets were all purchased and used on a daily basis during a period of one week and were of a single trip variety, with the exception of one which was a day ticket with multiple rides.  To derive pitches from numbers, reference was made to a simple system of musical notations used in China, called jian-pu.

Cloud Hands

By Tony Wheeler

Regular price $25.00 Sale

Duet for Guqin and Zhong Ruan, c.8'35

Cloud hands, or yun shou, is a form of movement in taiji quan (t’ai ch’i chuan) and some other Chinese martial arts, which is used in combat to deflect an opponent’s attacking punch or strike. Its main characteristic is that although appearing to be a very soft and fluid movement, in essence it possesses a high degree of internal strength which is transmitted to the opponent. Various aspects of yun shou are expressed in this piece.

Fugue

By Tony Wheeler

Regular price $20.00 Sale

Bb Clarinet and piano, c.3'15. Grade6/7

Most of the well known solo repertoire for clarinet dates from the 18th century or later and examples of Baroque writing for the instrument are few.  This piece is written in conscious imitation of the Baroque style paying particular homage to the work and creative spirit of J S Bach.  It follows a formal schema of exposition, development and recapitulation, and its tessiture exploits the full range of the clarinet.

Introduction to the Upper Register for Clarinet, An

By Tony Wheeler

Regular price $35.00 Sale

A book designed specifically to introduce the notes of the clarion register in a way which makes them easy to assimilate. Each note is dealt with easily and thoroughly, with tuneful studies, before moving on to the next note. Also included are exercises for the student to practice reading in the upper register, and some simple, familiar tunes.

This book is intended as a supplement to any of the available tutor books, many of which deal with the clarion register notes rather too abruptly, and with insufficient time for the development of familiarity.

Mission of Juan Bautista de Morales, The

By Tony Wheeler

Regular price $85.00 Sale

For flute, zhongruan -中阮, percussion and strings

Juan Bautista de Morales (1597-1664) was a Spanish missionary who entered the Dominican order in 1614.  In 1620 he went to Manilla where he learned the Amoy dialect in order to minister to the Chinese community in the Philippines.  After two unsuccessful attempts to work in Cambodia, he went to China’s Fujian Province, where a Dominican mission had been established in 1631.
Morales spent most of his time in China in the province of Fujian, parts of this piece employ some melodic phrases from an ancient genre of traditional Chinese music originating from this region, known as Nanyin 南音 (southern sound).  The phrases are played by the soloists, and by the strings.

Commissioned by Karen Carey on behalf of Santa Sabina College for the celebration of the 800th anniversary of the Dominican Order.
