This piece is inspired by the ocean and the sense of wonder it brings. The piano semi-quavers in the opening bars represent the sun sparkling on the water's surface. The lyrical, soaring phrases of the tuba take the listener deeper into the depths of the ocean, to the world of whales and other majestic sea creatures.

The composer was inspired to write this after learning about NASA's 2012 Mars Rover mission. Mars Rover mission. Part 1 Red Dirt reflects the vehicle bumping over boulders on the Martian landscape. Part 2 Red Mysteries symbolizes the many unanswered questions we have about Mars, and captures the stillness and stasis of the landscape. Part 3 Red Children is a playful pondering on a future Mars colony.

This tuba sonata is a highly original and accessible contribution to solo tuba music. The music combines post-modern harmonies with neo-classical form. The first movement has a dreamy, floating quality achieved through sparse orchestration combined with ambiguous harmonies. The tuba part is technically challenging as it contains long phrases, played softly in the high register.
