Harpsichord

Couperin

By Ann Carr-boyd

Regular price $34.00 Sale

Spoken voice, harpsichord and ensemble, c.10'15.  Composed 1974.

The spoken words are taken from Francois Couperin’s L’Art de toucher Le Clavecin, a manual on harpsichord playing which Couperin wrote in 1716. In it he covers very completely all matters of style and technique, from which a few sentences have been chosen as a starting point for this composition, which is a homage to French music of all periods.

Heavy Rock Metal Dancer meet the BaroQ Bear, The

By Gina Ismene Chitty

Regular price $27.00 Sale

For piano, harpsichord, drums and cymbals, c.4'00

The BaroQ Bear is a character from the Grunewald (Green Forest) in Berlin of the the early 1700s. He habitually composes preludes, fugues and toccatas in abundance, conjecturing what he perceives as logical, balanced tonal relationships and brilliantly opposing thematic arguments. He time-travels to the twenty-first century and has an encounter with a long-haired young man carrying an electric guitar. He is astounded by the young man’s nonchalant demeanor.

As the young man begins to play rock music on his guitar, the Bear becomes increasingly perturbed by the illogical harmonic nuances in his musical output.
He seemed to be hammering out the same few notes and making a metallic noise which the BaroQ bear perceived as irritating and tediously wearisome. He speaks to the young man slowly and explains the logic of counterpoint, and a better way to create good music. The two of them play together, each in his own way, and finally, after a lengthy narration from the BaroQ bear, they merge and settle the score in an amicable manner.

      By Ann Carr-boyd

      Regular price $9.00 Sale

      Solo harpsichord, c.2'50

The music is gentle and a bit mystical, enhanced by generous amounts of sustaining pedal from the piano - the piece is an exercise in performing expressively with uncomplicated note patterns, much the same way in which Japanese and Chinese paintings concentrate on achieving expression without too many brushstrokes.  Composed 2018

Stairway to the Moon - harpsichord/fortepiano

      By Ann Carr-boyd

      Regular price $17.00 Sale

Harpsichord and fortepiano, c.5'00.   Advanced grade

As the Full Moon rises over Roebuck Bay in Broome at certain times the exposed tidal flats are transformed into a staircase of light rising slowly to meet the orb hanging huge and shimmering gold. This phenomenon is a rare spectacle that brings many tourists to various vantage points including Town Beach and the Mangrove Hotel to wait for the Moon to rise. As the excitement and anticipation mounts spectators at the Hotel are entertained by a honky tonk piano belting out a jazz theme which contains an undercurrent of bass repetitive notes. However this percussive refrain also evokes the didgeridoo and the clap stick- a homage to the those who first witnessed this strange and captivating event in the Dreamtime. The old meets the new. This is a special and ancient place on the west Pilbara and Kimberley coast of Western Australia. The mangroves and mudflats of Roebuck is in Yawuru country. The Staircase forms part of the Lurujarri Trail.
As the Moon rises and exposes the stairs the piano chords become silvery and step up in rises with tonalities we have grown to look forward to from this composer. The Moon interlude then becomes a captivating mixture of the modern spectators excitement and wonder as the staircase builds and of the old Moon man of the Dreamtime as danced by the Bardi people who understand the strong tides and their precious saltwater environment.
