Piano solo, c.5'00., 8th grade
The Staircase (or Stairway) to the Moon is a natural phenomenon caused by the rising of a full moon reflecting off the exposed mudflats in Roebuck Bay at extremely low tide, to create a beautiful optical illusion of a stairway reaching to the moon. This spectacular sight occurs from March through to November.
This composition depicts a happy gathering of people at the local pub, set to watch the rising of the moon. There is general party mode until the moon rises and casts its spell. The music reflects this serene change of mood - returning again to jocular mode when the moon is high in the sky.
