Dark, the Light, The
By Diana Blom
Regular price
$28.00
A long song and short story. Helen Garner is a very fine and evocative Australian short story writer and ‘The Dark, the Light’, from Postcards from Surfers (Penguin 1985). Almost a music theatre work in miniature because of the different musical styles matching different text moods, the song can be sung by memory, but also with the score held as if reading the story to an audience. This works was inspired by a drawing of the Australian rainforest tree, Stenocarpus sinatus (Firewheel Tree), with its distinctive wheel-like inflorescences and mature fruits and seeds, shaped this work, the sound gestures and the sustain pedal as "sound brush" colouring specified notes and note groups.

Drawing Inflorescence
By Diana Blom
Regular price
$25.00
The title and influences for this work come from two sources. First, the exquisitely detailed botanical illustrations y Elizabeth Cooper of the Australian rainforest tree, Stenocarpus sinuatus (Firewheel Tree), with its distinctive wheel-like inflorescences and mature fruits and seeds, shaped the work, the sound gestures and the sustain pedal as ‘sound brush’ colouring specified notes and note groups. The second influence was Deanna Petherbridge’s book, The Primary of Drawing (2010), which explains and illustrates technical drawing terms such as pentimento, grisaille, chiaroscuro, parerga, reverso, ébauche and line itself. Several of these have been drawn into the work. A companion piece for piano and toy piano (one player), Drawing Firewheels, exploressimilar sound concepts. The work was written for pianist, Michael Kieran Harvey, who gave its first performance.

Piano Duet
Playing piano duets is one of the most intimate ways of making music. Dream Weaving explores this intimacy through crossing hands, exchanged motives and interlocking textures and players are to work out which hand crosses when. Musically the piece moves in a tonal whole-tone sound world to evoke the shifting, ephemeral quality of dreams.

Fearless Dreams

The work explores the sonorities and textures and references a piece for clarinet and piano, Painajainen (Nightmare), by Finnish composer Kari Tikka. Reference too to some small fragments of Aboriginal musics. The stages of sleep and dreaming acted as an initial guide for the structure of the work.

Full Moon - CD
By Diana Weston, Michael Tsalka
Regular price
$25.00
Classical and contemporary music for square piano and harpsichord.
Michael Tsalka: Piano forte primo, harpsichord I
Diana Weston: Piano forte secondo, harpsichord II
In the making of this album, our purpose was to bring to light a long-forgotten and yet highly significant instrument that was the ‘square’ piano - specifically the English square piano. We wanted to demonstrate a little of its nature, to outline its relevance in social history, to let you hear its voice. To do this, we are fortunate to have available a relevant instrument – a Robertson c. 1835 partially restored square piano crafted in Liverpool. In the recording, music from its era (late eighteenth to early nineteenth century), is interspersed with newly created pieces that are sympathetic to its variable sounds and registers, that is, its limitations and virtues. Genji (the Shining Prince) and the Koto Player
By Diana Blom
Regular price
$30.00
Violin and piano, c.8'30
The story of "The Tale of Genji" is full of musical references and is portrayed in this piece. Genji, himself, plays the wagon, a six-stringed koto considered old-fashioned in the story, while the key women in his life play the kin, a seven-stringed, unfretted koto from China. Several modes are mentioned including the richi (ryo) and ritsu modes, to indicate a change of mood. Poems which have a constant role in special conversations are described as tanka (short song), waka (long song) or simply uta (song).
