Across the Oceans Deep and Blue (flute)

By John Peterson

Regular price $25.00 Sale

Flute and piano, c.4'20.  HSC level of difficulty

Across the Oceans Deep and Blue is inspired by the fact that Australia is an island continent, and the music represents a vision of the deep blue oceans that surround it. The flute melodies begin with simple statements of motivic figures that continue to develop in intensity as the music progresses, all the while supported by piano music that is built frequently on rich harmonies derived from ascending perfect 5th intervals, all of which is intended to reinforce the concept of not only the profundity and power of the ocean but also the richness of its colours.

Across the Oceans Deep and Blue (piano 4 hands)

By John Peterson

Regular price $25.00 Sale

Piano four hands, c.5'00.

The music of Across the Oceans (Deep and Blue) attempts to evoke the image of a vast expanse of ocean as it extends towards an endless horizon. Although this expanse of ocean can at first glance seem to be unchanging, it is always in constant motion, with the ebb and flow of the waves, and the blue colours are in constant variation. Sailing across the ocean can be an exciting but also sometimes slightly fearful experience, as we can on occasion become aware that the power of the sea is beyond our control. Thus, while the music is, for the most part, content to evoke a gently flowing and relatively peaceful experience, there are moments that hint at the more turbulent and unpredictable nature of the ocean itself. Much of the harmonic material for this music is derived from a vertical arrangement of ascending perfect 5th intervals, (an ascending C-G-D-A chord, for example) creating chords that are wonderfully rich in harmonic sonorities. The intent here was to evoke the mysterious depths of the ocean, and the power of these bodies of water.

Drive (horn)

By John Peterson

Regular price $50.00 Sale

French horn in F and piano c.3'00.  Grade 7

Drive is propelled along by the steady but unorthodox 13/8 rhythm which continues throughout the piece. Although the relentless quaver figurations in the piano part give the impression of speed, the French Horn part is quite relaxed and has strong melodic contours. The duration of the piece is about 4 minutes 30 seconds.

This piece was inspired by car journeys made along the wide, open roads of rural and outback Australia.

Drive (piano four-hands)

By John Peterson

Regular price $30.00 Sale

For piano four hands, c.4'50.  Grade 7

Drive is a rhythmic work whose impetus is derived for the use of almost constant quaver motion within a 13/8 time signature. The relentless quaver figurations give the impression of speed and constant movement, while the often smoothly legato style melodies sometimes form a strong contrast with the rhythm, an effect that suggests security and control in amongst the hectic pace of the music.

Emergence

By John Peterson

Regular price $80.00 Sale

Flute sextet, c.7'00

The title of this work reflects the manner in which the music in each section gradually unfolds and ‘emerges’ from small embryonic ideas and cells of musical material. There is also a subtle suggestion of the word ‘emergency’, or perhaps in this case more correctly of ‘emerging urgency’ which, in the context of the work, reflects the fast paced energy and rhythmic momentum that dominates the music in the first and final sections.
Emergence was the winning entry in the Australian Flute Festival Composition Competition 2015. It was first performed by Melissa Doecke (piccolo), Lauren Gorman (flute1), Georgia Williams (flute 2), Michaud Munday (flute 3), David Shaw (alto flute), and Peter Sheridan (bass flute), conducted by Elisabeth Hobbs, at School of Music, Australian National University, Canberra, on 4 October, 2015.
