Woman's Song I, c.3'20 - expresses changing moods and emotions, qualities sometimes associated with femininity.
Woman's Song II, c.2'00 - expresses energy and exhilaration together with tenderness and joy, the joy we may know in a celebration of life.
As with both pieces, the tonality is based on the Balinese pelog scale and this, together with rhythms that might be used by the gamelan, reflects something of the colour and dynamic contrast often to be heard in Balinese gamelan performance.

Zardash

Solo piano, c.4'00. Advanced gradeThe word "Zardash" dates back to the times of Zarathustra. It is the symbol of the gold disc-like halo - signifying power, brilliance and the sun. The composition is loosely based on the Greek myth of Icarus, in his exultant and dangerous flight towards the sun.
Zardash was written for Aaron McMillan who first recorded and performed the piece in his project: "Arc of Light". Aaron was a well celebrated young Australian pianist who tragically lost his life to a brain tumor in 2007. Composed 2001
