Cross-cultural percussion and dance. c.12'00A cross cultural 'comprovisation' for musician and dancer, using mainly percussion (tuned and non tuned) instruments and sound making objects. The piece is developed through an improvisation on composed motives, number sequences and irregular rhythms. This is tempered by a collaborative interaction with a dancer. The dancer listens, watches and engages with an eclectic mix of instrumental colours and textures; the musician watches, listens and responds to a vocabulary of dance gestures; chooses material according to the ebb and flow of the interaction that occurs. Jiriyai! means war cry in the Sydney language. It is dedicated to Pemulwuy, who led a resistance movement against invading Europeans.

On 12 October 2002, three bombs were detonated in the tourist district of Kuta on the island of Bali.
Members of the terrorist Islamic organisation Jemaah Islamiyah were convicted in relation to the bombings in which 202 people died, including 88 Australians.

Land of Cruelty

For amplified, ring-modulated oboe soloist and orchestra
The works incorporates a form of real-time electronic processing to the soloist’s part known as ring-modulation. This occurs when the amplified signal of the oboe soloist is multiplied together with a modulating frequency provided by an obligatodouble bass player, creating a harsh but vivid sonority reminiscent of the Australian landscape.
Land of Cruelty’s narrative is the depiction of harsh landscape transitions evident in our continent where an area can be densely covered in life one year, but completely dry and devoid of life the next. The oboe soloist is the navigator of this journey and depicts the ‘voice of the land’, with much of its melodic material influenced by transcriptions of Australian Aboriginal melodies. The pitches of one melody entitled Malayah (quoted at the opening and closing of the work) are multiplied together to create the various ring-modulated effects. Each section of the work is defined by a ring-modulated sonority realised by the oboe soloist and double bass that is then re-synthesised by the orchestra before transitioning into a more harmonious sonority. These orchestrated colours provide a sonic canvas, crafted and moulded over time, over which the oboe soloist is placed.

She moves rhythmically to the music in the cocktail bar, dressed in a short red dress, fancy high heeled boots and a scarlet cap.
A select few young men are trying out dance moves and the young waitress becomes distracted. She yearns to join this high-energy group in their fun. But this is her first job, so she decides, rather ruefully, not to join in the fun and risk getting fired.

The constrictions on a teenage girl’s romantic sensibilities make her somewhat frazzled and irritable during the Covid-19 lockdown - but then she decides to deal with the deprivation with wisdom and prudence, striving to be sensible under the imposed circumstances. She raids her family library and does what is practical and somewhat functional, in choosing to settle down to Jane Austen’s famous book “Sense and Sensibility”.
The quirky and nonchalant music - fragmented melodies logically bound together but seemingly somewhat in limbo, captures her mood and pleases her sensibilities.
