Dinnertime

By Linda Dalgliesh

For woodwind quartet - bassoon, clarinet, flute, oboe , c.1'55

The title is given to the name of a horse in Albert Facey's 1981 autobiography, "A Fortunate Life". He recounts how, on a cattle drive in Western Australia, his horse bolted during a storm and they were lost in harsh country for days with no food or water. They managed to survive with the help of local indigenous people, and were eventually reunited with the other drovers. Throughout the ordeal, Dinnertime proved to be a delightful and worthy companion. The piece starts out as a light-hearted romp; a filly trotting through ancient country, the landscape viewed through the filter of youth and careless abandon.
