New Art Song of the Pacific Rim CD
By Blom, Hanrahan
Regular price
$25.00
Kevin Hanrahan, tenor and Diana Blom, piano
Containing music from five countries around the Pacific Rim – Australia, New Zealand, Colombia, USA and Japan – this program of new art song explores settings of poetry and letters written over several centuries. US composer, Gwyneth W. Walker, set letters by John Muir, a 19th century American naturalist and early advocate for the preservation of US wilderness areas, and Australian composer, Diana Blom, set poems of 19th and 20th century American writers, Hartley Burr Alexander, Mary Elizabeth Frye, Henry David Thoreau and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in a Portrait of America. Colombian-based composer, Moisès Bertran Ventejo, set three poems of Josep Janés, a Catalan poet of the first half of the 20th century. New Zealand composers Anthony Ritchie, Chris Adams and Clare Maclean have set poems of New Zealand poets James K. Baxter, Sam Hunt, Brian Turner and Gillis Maclean, from across the 20th century and into the 21st. West Australian composer, Alex Turley, set texts from the 8th century by Tang dynasty Chinese poet Du Fu and from the 21st century by West Australian poet, Caroline McAllister. The three Japanese art songs by Közaburo Hirai and Hattori Tadashi are settings of poems by Kitahara Hakushū, Kitami Shihoko and Ōki Atsuo, all written in the first half of the 20th century.

New Music for Multiple Keyboards
By Blom, Hannan
Regular price
$30.00
for piano, toy piano, harpsichord, MIDI piano
Diana Blom and Michael Hannan, the curators and producers of this double CD of new music for multiple keyboards, were students together at the Department of Music of the University of Sydney in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Both were also studying harpsichord with Dorothy White in this period. When she was on the staff of ABC music in the mid-1970s, Diana Blom produced recordings of Michael Hannan playing Peter Sculthorpe's Koto Musics and Landscape, works that involve multitracking of extended technique piano parts. These recordings were subsequently released on a Move Records LP and later re-released on several Move Records CDs.In 2006 Diana and Michael presented concerts of a dozen or so of their solo piano works in both Sydney where Diana lives, and in Nimbin where Michael lives. The concerts included performances by them of Diana's The Green Man Dances for piano duet. This piece was included on the Multiple Keyboards project but played, on this occasion, by Jennifer MacRitchie and Pablo Puentes.Since that piano performance project, Michael and Diana have collaborated on several composition repertoire-creation projects, notably the Shadows and Silhouettes performance at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 2010.This project, initially involving Australian composers writing piano pieces influenced by Chinese culture, was eventually taken up by Italian pianist, Antonietta Loffredo, resulting in the Shadows and Silhouettes CD (Wirripang, Wirr 047, 2012) which includes Chinese culture-inspired works from Australia, Italy, Singapore and Malaysia. The idea of the "Multiple Keyboards" project sprang from these earlier experiences. In discussion, Diana and Michael felt they would like to create an album of new works that fitted the general principle of two or more keyboardists playing on one or more keyboard instruments. The instrumentation is dominated by pianos and toy pianos (and combinations thereof), but there is one work for multi-tracked harpsichords and another for multi-tracked MIDI electric pianos.

Alfred Hill, the Australian composer is reputed to have said “To me there are only two kinds of music - good or bad. All old music has at one time been modern and all modern music will one day become old so why worry? Time is a great critic that puts them in their place”.
The piano compositions on this recording have been deliberately chosen because of their beauty, their inherent musicality, the craft and skill of the composers and their appeal to the listener. Not considered in their selection was any decision based on whether the style was the fashion at the time of their composition. All of the composers on this recording are Australian women who were born between 1862 and 1915.
To support this recording, Dr Jeanell Carrigan has researched and compiled three volumes of scores of these and additional piano works, most of which have not previously been published. These volumes, together with individual CDs, are available online.

On the Sorrow of War - CD
By Rachel Tolmie
Regular price
$25.00
1The title of this CD was inspired by the story of HMAS Sydney and her final sea-battle with the German raider HSK Kormoranon November 19, 1941. This poignant and most magnificent writing by Peter Webb, for cor anglais, voice and orchestra, concludes the recording. While in contrast, more light-hearted works by Peter Webb, Paul Paviour, Brett M McKern and John Martin for cor anglais and piano are performed by Rachel Tolmie and pianist John Martin.

Piano Imagery - CD
By Miriam Hyde
Regular price
$30.00
Music composed by Miriam Hyde. Each of the 25 pieces on this double CD has been introduced and discussed by the composer followed by the performance by her. (Samples of her introductions are not listed here.) First recorded in 1986 and now released by Wirripang, available online.
The CDs provide a doubly-rare opportunity to hear a composer speak about and perform her own compositions. In her introduction to each piece she gives an insight into its inspiration (often Nature, something artistic, romantic English poems, or, as a thank-you for a kind gesture), its structure, types of pianistic devices and tips for performance.
Disc 2 contains her more advanced works.

Piano Music of Meta Overman, The CD
By Jeanell Carrigan
Regular price
$25.00
Described as Koningin van de Klankkleur en Fantasie [Queen of tone colour and fantasy], Dutch born composer, Meta Overman (1907-1993) spent most of her adult life in Perth, Western Australia. Her musical output was extensive and captured here on this CD is much of her piano works. The composer from an early age had the ability to transform pictures into sounds and this is evident in all her compositions. Jeanell Carrigan spent many months researching her piano works which resulted in four volumes scripted from Overman's manuscripts, and each with their own CD recording, and this stand-alone disc. The four volumes of scores are available online.
