Clouds
By Linda Dalgliesh
Regular price
$50.00
How do we respond to loss? We can wear the face of a stoic and go about our day; or shut ourselves away to cope in privacy. We can attempt forgetfulness, expunge every detail; or clutch the dearest memories. In every case, the inevitable sky is waiting for us to circle around and come home.

Dinnertime
By Linda Dalgliesh
Regular price
$25.00
The title is given to the name of a horse in Albert Facey's 1981 autobiography, "A Fortunate Life". He recounts how, on a cattle drive in Western Australia, his horse bolted during a storm and they were lost in harsh country for days with no food or water. They managed to survive with the help of local indigenous people, and were eventually reunited with the other drovers. Throughout the ordeal, Dinnertime proved to be a delightful and worthy companion. The piece starts out as a light-hearted romp; a filly trotting through ancient country, the landscape viewed through the filter of youth and careless abandon.

Dreaming of Ozymandias
By Linda Dalgliesh
Regular price
$23.00
The style is contemporary jazz, with a nod to the dissonant melodies of jazz pianist Thelonius Monk. The piece was inspired by two literary works, the classic sonnet "Ozymandias" by Percy Byshe Shelley, and the 1989 Discworld novel "Pyramids" by Sir Terry Pratchett.

Falling Petals
By Linda Dalgliesh
Regular price
$30.00
This piece uses various devices such as the musical round, harmonised arpeggios of diminished sevenths, and variations on pentatonic scales. It was inspired by the memory of sitting in a secluded bower by a pond, watching sakura (cherry) petals drift down onto dark water. The first half alludes to minor-key Japanese folksongs such as "Sakura Sakura" and "Tōryanse". In the second half, the lifts towards a major tonality and aspirations of hope.

For flute quartet, c.5'15
Piccolo, two flutes in C and alto flute
The Fortescue River passes through hard desert country; gravel beds and sandbanks shaped by wind and water, isolated deep pools, flat open sections of intertwining river courseways that become sticky with red clay after rain, trees thinly dispersed, or clustered in sheltered pockets around the bases of rocky outcrops. A quartet of Flutes present the rugged spectacle of this ancient landscape in a series of vignettes, some playful, and others sombre.

Geregones
By Linda Dalgliesh
Regular price
$20.00
Trio for two flutes and piccolo, c.2'05
In Australia, we often see small insect-eating birds moving through the bushland as a group; gerygones, fantails, thornbills, weebills, with an occasional robin or small honeyeater. This piece is a representation of their nimble flitting and darting, contact calls, and occasional alarms, as they search for food together.

Hotel Quebec Tango
By Linda Dalgliesh
Regular price
$23.00
This piece was inspired by an essay in the 1939 autobiography "Wind, Sand and Stars" of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. He recalls the miraculous survival of a fellow pilot, Henri Guillaumet, who disappeared while flying the mail route across the Andes and was given up for dead. Guillaumet had been caught in a high altitude snowstorm and forced to land in a remote crater. Hotel, Quebec and Tango are part of the phonetic alphabet (Alfa Bravo Charlie) used internationally by pilots. I am almost certain that Guillaumet's biplane would have had a call sign, and I like to imagine it contained the letters HQT.

By Linda Dalgliesh
Regular price
$23.00
"The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." I have been imagining this poor maligned dog since my childhood typing lessons. Why has she been described as lazy? Is she old and arthritic? Or is she a young working dog at the end of a long day? Has she been rounding up sheep in the hot sun? In either case, doesn't she now deserve to walk slowly onto a cool verandah and rest in the shade, without the indignity of a rude fox leaping over her?
