James Kortum (flute) and Jeanell Carrigan (piano)

Sonatas for Flute and Piano by Australian Women

"The flute is an instrument blessed with an expressiveness all its own. Lustrous and penetrating, tender and lyrical, charming and sensual, its hues would put a chameleon to shame."  (Rhein, 1963)

The above quote has been taken from a review John von Rhein wrote about the well-known flute virtuoso Donald Peck who was, for some time, the teacher of James Kortum. It expresses the many wonderful qualities of the flute as an instrument, capable of a variety of sounds, an instrument capable of adjusting its basic colour characteristics to suit the style of the works that are being performed. The five flute sonatas on this recording are all quite different in style and employ different timbres with only these two aspects in common – they are all written by an Australian composer who was also a woman. The sonatas by Miriam Hyde and Phyllis Batchelor have already joined the stream of traditional flute repertoire but the two sonatas by Meta Overman and the solo flute sonata by Margery Smith, written especially for the virtuosity of James Kortum are recorded here for the first time.

Composing Against the Tide

By Jeanell Carrigan

Regular price $45.00 Sale

Early twentieth century Australian women composers and their piano music.

There were a relatively large number of women born in Australia between 1860 and 1915 who became composers of piano music. For many of them this was not an easy task. They did not always receive encouragement. Certainly many could not earn a living at this creative work and they battled not only the gender inequality that still largely exists today but also against musical fashion and trends that their works did not always reflect, as well as the backlash which came from being born into a ‘colonial’ country.  This is their story.

Australian Heritage Collection - the piano works of these women have been published in three volumes as researched and edited by Jeanell. Each volume contains a CD of the works within.

A CD Nostalgia has been released with many of these works recorded by Jeanell.  It was featured as ABC Classic FM "CD of the week", November 2016.

Concertino

By Meta Overman

Regular price $70.00 Sale

for Five Flutes, c.5'00

By 1990 Overman was almost completely blind and had lost mobility. This physical and emotional deterioration is especially evident in this composition, which became the penultimate completed work. It is a dramatic work in two movements. The parts are written antiphonally with the first flute taking more of a solo role than just playing as part of the ensemble.

Concerto for Piano and Orchestra for Two Pianos

By Meta Overman

Regular price $100.00 Sale

Three movements for two pianos arranged from the orchestral version, c.25'00

In 1942 Overman wrote the piano concerto which was performed at the time by the Rotterdam Philharmonic orchestra and Marinus Flipse as piano soloist. Unfortunately, due to the war and the occupation of Rotterdam by the Nazis the orchestral parts, including the piano part, were lost and all that has been available since was a handwritten full score that had been retained in the Overman archives in the Music Library at UWA.
The work is in three movements and is written at times like a duet in that the piano is one instrument and the orchestra, as a whole, is the other and the two alternate with the main melodic and harmonic motives.

The manuscripts have been researched and edited by Jeanell Carrigan, 2020. The work has been recorded by Jeanell Carrigan and Tonya Lemoh and a CD is included with the two scores.

Eight Monos

Eight pieces for flute and electronic keyboard, c.6'00

This work is ideally performed with any electronic keyboard, even if the Casiotone model is not available due to the rhythmic patterns which are preset, and which continue while the keyboard player is involved playing other material.  If however, an electronic instrument is not available, certain compromises could be made to enable the work to be performed using an acoustic piano.

Grotesque - CD

By Meta Overman

Regular price $25.00 Sale

An Operina and other chamber music by Meta Overman.

The Music of Meta Overman is innovative, individual, sometimes humorous, expressing amazing creativity and powered by strong visual imagery. The desire to express imagery in sound was obvious from an early age when the young Meta would place picture books on the piano and attempt to play what she could see. Her musical language transforms images into musical concepts and sounds and this intention is evident in all her compositions.

Grotesque is a tragic comedy with quite an absurd plot involving an old man – the character played by the clarinettist, a young girl, sung by the soprano and a ghost whose antics are created by the sounds of the piano. Its structure is theme and variations as in the original version for piano four hands and the plot is described by a narrator. It is a little questionable whether in a performance that is staged the narrator is really necessary. In fact there is no mention of a narrator on the original score though when recording the work a narrator could be deemed necessary to outline the antics of the characters who cannot be seen. In a staged version the characters create the images and the “narration” on the score can be viewed as merely stage directions. The dancer would therefore act out the antics of the ghost and the instrumentalists would become the characters described by the stage directions.

Goetz Richter AM narrator; Narelle Yeo soprano; Charlotte Fetherston viola; Susan Newsome clarinet; Tonya Lemoh piano; Jeanell Carrigan piano

Meeting of Two Worlds, A: The Life and Times of Composer Meta Overman

By Patricia Thorpe

Regular price $30.00 Sale

Meta Overman (1907-1993)

The aim of this book is to bring Meta Overman ‘alive’ by presenting her in all aspects of her life, and as much as possible through others eyes with letters, critiques and conversations. I view this publication as a jumping off platform for further research so that anyone may take up the story from any point that curiosity or interest dictates; and in so doing not only be richly rewarded, but add a further piece to the jigsaw being painted of this amazing woman and her music.
