Solo bassoon with horn ensemble backing track, c.5'50
Seven and Nine has the form of Recitative and Aria for solo bassoon with a backing track of 6 pre-recorded horn parts. It was premiered by Ben Hoadley at the Sydney MicroFest 4 in 2022. There are harmonies using the 7th harmonics of the overtone series. (7-limit harmonies in just intonation music theory). These are both above and below standard tuning by 31 cents (compared to a standard semitone of 100 cents). The notation supports the sound of the horn harmonies so are reasonably straightforward for the bassoon soloist to hear.

Horn and bassoon, c.5'00
The music is composed using the tuning system called 'Just Intonation'. Here the tunings are organised around twelve sets of harmonics playable on a standard double horn. Each valve slide is precisely tuned in a just intonation ratio to the central pitch, F concert. The bassoon player has more limiied number of pitches to play though most will require non-standard fingerings to match the horn.

Sonatina in Classical Style
By Thomas McConochie
Regular price
$25.00
Horn and Piano in three movements, c.7'00, grade 5
This horn sonatina is a 21st century composition yet is also faithful to 18th century musical style and horn playing technique. Thus, the piece can be played on either valve horn or natural horn. When played on valve horn, the piece is suitable for intermediate horn player (AMEB Grade 5) and up. Advanced level horn players will also enjoy performing this piece on natural horn.
The sonatina is in classical sonata form. The first movement contrasts a main subject based on a descending tonic chord arpeggio with a second subject that is more lyrical and stepwise. The second movement combines long tones in the horn line with the piano accompaniment moving underneath; the movement is simple and hymn-like in style and harmony. The third movement is a rondo in 6/8 time that will have classically trained horn players feeling right at home!

Studies for Low Horn

Studies for low horn
Grade 7 AMEB Orchestral Brass: Horn. List A
No 15 Medium Swing
No 18 Allegretto
No 22 Allegretto scherzando
The low register is an area commonly neglected by students of the French Horn, yet when they come to play in a band, orchestra or ensemble, they find that the low notes are often required, as they are in the advanced solo repertoire.
Work on the low register will help the student gain a richer and fuller sound, due to the greater relaxation of the embouchure needed to produce steady in-tune notes. The tone across the whole range should improve as a result of mastering the low register.
Some of the studies address the issue of moving quickly between registers, a technique required by Second Horn players in works of the Classical period, while others focus on playing the F sharp below middle C, a challenge for players who mainly use the B flat side, as it should be played on the F side for good intonation.
