At the party the children dance passionately to many tunes, represented here by a Tango followed by a Jazzy Waltz. But when night time approaches it is time to send the children off to bed to the sound of a toy soldier March. Tucked up in bed at last, the children soon fall asleep as the sounds of a gentle Lullaby permeate the evening air.

Peripheral Visions is for clarinet, viola and piano—the combination used by Mozart in his so-called ‘Kegelstatt’ Trio. Like the Mozart, the tempo between each of the movements is essentially the same, although differences of metre ensure differences of character.
Inspiration for the work came from reading Unrecounted, a collection of poems by W.G. Sebald with accompanying drawings by Jan Peter Tripp. The act of seeing is a central theme of the collection. Tripp’s drawings are portraits that focus on the eyes of his subjects. Sebald’s texts are typically enigmatic, highlighting the marginal and impermanent—things that escape observation, on the edges of awareness, visions that highlight the peripheral.

The title refers to one of three gunus, or forces, in Hindu culture. Of the other two, sattwa embodies all that is pure and fine, the essence of the ideal state to be attained; and tamas is associated with heaviness and resistance, an obstacle to the realisation of sattwa. Rajas is the active principle, embodying restlessness and passion, and is the way in which tamas is overcome. These concepts informed the composition of my solo cello piece, Rajas for cello alone.

Viola and piano, c.3'00, Grade 5Written as a tribute to a remarkable animal who, when the loving family she allowed to look after her moved some hundred or so miles away, turned up on the doorstep of her old home about three months after the new owners took possession. One morning, Rosie sat there, on the front door mat, waiting calmly for a greeting, for food to appear, and things to progress in their usual order, including a dive straight for the lap of the new owner, normally not a great lover of cats. But Rosie, none the worse for her long journey and ‘living rough’, soon made it clear, in her serene, unruffled way, that she was back in HER home!
