Solo Bass Clarinet in Bb, c.5'40. Grade A.Mus.AAMEB Manual List D, Level 3 Licentiate
The title derives in part from the work "Journey to Horseshoe Bend", which was composed just before this work. The third section of that work is set in a desolate landscape of red cliffs and burnt rocks known as "Fire Country" in Aranda Aboriginal mythology. The bass clarinet perhaps evokes the desolate quality of a landscape after fire.

It follows a formal schema of exposition, development and recapitulation, and its tessiture exploits the full range of the clarinet.

Full Moon creates an atmosphere of reflection and mystery like the moon itself. The piece meanders in an impressionistic and improvisatory manner, as if dreaming. Centering around G phrygian mode with much chromatic colour, it takes inspiration from images from NASA's Grail Mission in 2012 to map the moon's surface.
Atonal, Neo-Romantic, Neo-Classical. Moderate tempo.

Bass clarinet and piano, c.10'00. Advanced to professional gradeThe Gardens of Stone National Park is in the Blue Mountains World Heritage area (NSW). This toccata-like piece is written in recognition of the threat to this pristine environment by the encroachment of coal mining enterprises on its borders, gradually degrading the rock formations.
Originally composed for piano and didjeridu this version for piano and bass clarinet was created in 2021. Other versions of the piece include cello and string orchestra. An arrangement for full symphony orchestra has been made by Dr. Steven Stanke for performance by Symphony Central Coast (NSW) in 2022.

At times it could even suggest a Punch and Judy situation with its 'comic mystery' effects created by sudden silences and punctuations. Jazz rhythmic and harmonic features often manifest. The clarinet leaps about gymnastically: sometimes dissolving into quasi-cadenza passages. The piano complements with off-beat rhythmic accompanimental utterances and synchronised chordal 'punches'.
