Sonata No 5 "The Pied Piper"
By Larry Sitsky
Regular price
$25.00
Solo flute. Advanced grade.
Fifty years separates the composition of Larry Sitsky’s first Sonata for Solo Flute (1959) and The Pied Piper, Sonata No. 5 for Solo Flute which was composed in Canberra in April 2019. This work alludes to the Medieval German legend of the Rat-Catcher of Hamelin, while his other four sonatas refer to an Oriental source. The Pied Piper contains internal sections labelled by the composer as A, B, C, and D, which each have their own individual character that is maintained throughout the composition.
The premiere performance of The Pied Piper was given by Uliana Zhivitskaya on the 5th of December 2019 at the Moscow Conservatoire, Russia (see YouTube link below).

The juxtaposition of usual chords in unexpected ways for such a tonal work adds to the comic effect of this work, as does the combination of the articulations: staccato, accents and slurs and the strong sense of harmony, a rhythmic drive imbues the piece.

The Sonatina is in three movements. The first is in a fairly traditional sonata form in the key of F major. The second is marked Andante and in the relative minor key, d minor, while the third begins in a very dance-like fashion. This opening is followed by a lyrical, flowing middle section and the ‘A’ section returns finishing on an A major chord. Bowing written into the score by Holland has been retained and Rosemary Curtin has generously contributed additional bowing after an intense perusal of the score.

Horn and Piano in three movements, c.7'00, grade 5
This horn sonatina is a 21st century composition yet is also faithful to 18th century musical style and horn playing technique. Thus, the piece can be played on either valve horn or natural horn. When played on valve horn, the piece is suitable for intermediate horn player (AMEB Grade 5) and up. Advanced level horn players will also enjoy performing this piece on natural horn.
The sonatina is in classical sonata form. The first movement contrasts a main subject based on a descending tonic chord arpeggio with a second subject that is more lyrical and stepwise. The second movement combines long tones in the horn line with the piano accompaniment moving underneath; the movement is simple and hymn-like in style and harmony. The third movement is a rondo in 6/8 time that will have classically trained horn players feeling right at home!
