Sonata for Violin and Piano

By Dulcie Holland

Regular price $50.00 Sale

Violin and piano, c.15'00

The sonata is in three movements. The first movement opens with a fanfare-type flourish played by the violin over a dominant pedal in the piano. The Edvard Grieg Sonata for Violin and Piano op. 13 in G major opens in a similar fashion and it is not known whether this sonata was a source of inspiration for Holland. The structure is not a straightforward sonata-allegro form instead it is built on several themes which reappear, closing with a coda.

The second movement is slow and in the style of a fantasy – free form. The third movement contains a jolly opening theme followed by a slower middle section. The opening theme returns to place the movement into a quasi-ternary form. It is a challenging work for both instruments and definitely an example of a duo work, both instruments playing an equal part.

The Fourteen Days of Bardo Thödol
(“Liberation by Hearing on the After-Death Plane”)

“The third stage of the Bardo, called the CHÖNYID BARDO when the Karmic apparitions appear”

Influenced by a study of Tibetan Buddhist chant, and this contributed some of the musical basis of the work.  The chant is heard in its purest form at the very beginning and the very end of the sonata. "The Tibetan Book of the Dead has fascinated the me for a long time, and the vivid descriptions therein of the Karmic visions, plus the expressed notion of the liberation of the soul via sound gave me the poetic basis of the work, which then naturally fell into the two movements." Larry Sitsky

Sonata No 3 "The Jade Flute"

        By Larry Sitsky

        Regular price $25.00 Sale

        Solo flute, c.9'20".  Advanced grade.

Whence comes the sound of the jade flute,
        Flying through the dark,
Coming with the spring wind, Hovering over Loyang?
        Li-Po

The Chinese held jade in the greatest veneration.  The word for jade, ‘yu’, also signified a beauty of spirit and the stone became the symbol of the five cardinal virtues.  Jade’s ability to produce a pure musical tone was known in China from very ancient times and indeed, gongs were made out of the material.  Jade was widely used as a miracle medicine as well as the most prized stone for elaborate works of art.

Music, undoubtedly the most spiritual of our arts.
        Lin Yutang

Composed 1994 (as a test piece for the 7th Australian Flute Competition in 1995).

Sonata No 4 "Song of the Shaman" (flute)

            By Larry Sitsky

            Regular price $25.00 Sale

            Solo flute.  Advanced grade
The objective for this Sonata was to embrace collaborations between composers and performers working together on psychical and mental inabilities and extra-abilities incorporated into musical textures. In 2015 the composer presented the manuscript of Song of the Shaman accompanied by the following description:

I treated the three octaves of the flute as symbolic:
middle octave- the Shaman sings, in our world
lower octave- he travels to the nether regions
upper octave- he flies in a bird/spirit body.
Musically, this meant that a different kind of music had to be conceived for each region, and that is essentially what goes on in the Sonata.
