Piano solo, c.5'00., 8th gradeThe Staircase (or Stairway) to the Moon is a natural phenomenon caused by the rising of a full moon reflecting off the exposed mudflats in Roebuck Bay at extremely low tide, to create a beautiful optical illusion of a stairway reaching to the moon. This spectacular sight occurs from March through to November.
This composition depicts a happy gathering of people at the local pub, set to watch the rising of the moon. There is general party mode until the moon rises and casts its spell. The music reflects this serene change of mood - returning again to jocular mode when the moon is high in the sky.

Stars Over New Norcia

Guitar and piano, c.7'00New Norcia is a monastic town in Western Australia founded by two Spanish Benedictine monks and it was here that the composer was inspired to write this piece. It commences with a fanfare reminiscent of the chapel bells and continues in processional mode - a reflection of continuity and daily repetition of prayers and tasks; reference too to the monks' chant set to Psalm 102. By contrast the guitar and Spanish music have a strong appearance in the music. Composed 2012

Grade 7The four movements suite consists of - Prelude is a slightly tongue-in-cheek look at American academic music of the latter part of the 20th century, whilst Badinerie returns to the musical ideas of J.S. Bach, at the same time incorporating some unusual harmonies and quirky patterns for both instruments. American Dream depicts the emotion of a gathering commemorating the life of Martin Luther King. The final Toccata incorporates thematic material from Aaron Copeland’s 'Fanfare for the Common Man'.
