The mood of the work is a musical interpretation of the westerly winds which prevail in inland NSW. Their persistence is echoed by the presence of the 4 note figure which opens the work. This figure, in turn, gives way to an ebb and flow of tempi and themes (like the wayward wind).

Where the Cudgegong Flows

Whimsical Prelude, Effimera and Tango

The Prelude is definitely whimsical in style. Effimera means fleeting - which is like the clouds pictured on the cover. Clouds can be fleeting and are always moving - just like this music. The harmonic changes were influenced by one of my favourite works by Bach.The Tango, should be played with a good amount of rhythmic definition,as is the case with the music and dance of the Tango. Whimsical Romance

Whimsical Romance for cello and piano was composed in April 2020.  It is an arrangement of the middle section of The Solitary Rag, which is a piano solo and also arranged as piano duet.  All three works were composed during the shutdown of socialising in the coronavirus crisis.

This piece takes a slightly wistful look at the pleasures of memories of places and occasions where we have been with friends and family.

    The work is based on a harmonic progression which appears in the reflective opening and then in a variety of ways throughout, including the baroque-like alberti bass section, with its tumbling chromatic progression. There is scope for improvisation in the final bars.
