Puppet Play in Java
By Betty Beath
Regular price
$40.00
Puppet Play in Java was inspired by the music of Sunda, West Java and of the street musicians heard playing in Bandung and Jogjakarta. Street musicians singing as they played and sometimes spontaneously move into dance, all being part of the colourful and relaxed life of Java. The composer sought to capture some of that relaxed and playful spirit in this work.

For students in their first years of vocal study. A short and humorous work. The vocal line is simple making use of the descending scale form with the occasional octave leap, supported in the accompaniment. Rhythm is simply expressed with contrasts between crotchet and triplet figuration. The simple piano accompaniment supports the voice and introduces some chromatic element.

Simple Gift, A
By Betty Beath
Regular price
$10.00
The work moves with an easy, relaxed tempo and the use of rubato is encouraged. Frequent changes in key structure occur and there is a continuing dialogue between the treble and bass lines. The composition is influenced by a folk song "Simple Gifts" but the work has its own character and moves freely with changes in melodic structure, tempo and dynamics. Composed 2016

Poems written by Carmen Bernos de Gasztold in the tranquil atmosphere of the Benedictine Abbaye Saint-Louis-du-Temple, south of Paris, translated from the French by Rumer Godden. In these short prayers, simple, humorous and intimate and delivered in the characteristic manner of each creature, there is something very close to the spirit of St Francis. Composed 1975

Mandolin ensemble, acoustic guitar and double bass. c.5'00
The work is expressive, coloured by cultural influences. It is a work offering opportunities for an appreciation of line; it is not too demanding technically or rhythmically and is harmonically very accessible. It is a simple work but one requiring sensitivity to balance between the individual groups engaged in its performance and to an exploitation of the wonderfully rich tones which the mandolin orchestra can provide.

By Betty Beath
Regular price
$15.00
Words by Gustaf Anderson, born in 1883. He was the composer's beloved grandfather, a gentle man, a poet and an orchardist. He led a quietly colourful life, moving amongst orange-laden trees and book-laden shelves. His orchard lay beside the Burrum River, in Central Queensland, and the three poems selected are from a book of his poetry, entitled Burrum River Ballads. His poems have the virtue of simplicity and clarity, it is poetry of its time. From the introduction to the same slim book: ‘He loved the bush and nature, and dedicated his whole life to his wife, Elizabeth, his family and to helping his fellow man’.
