SATB and piano, c.3'30, advanced vocal and piano technique. The words by Australian poet Jeremy Nelson evoke scenes of the countryside, and inclusion of phrases such as 'red, raked Buddhist garden' and the reference to English hay stacks add colour to the fact that we are 'passing through a Heysen painting.' The music follows the moods of the poem, at times marching with the words and sometimes interjecting with exuberant chords and rhythms. The middle section features voice parts floating over a harp-like pattern in the accompaniment leading to an invigorating finale. Composition date 1978.

The spoken words are taken from Francois Couperin’s L’Art de toucher Le Clavecin, a manual on harpsichord playing which Couperin wrote in 1716. In it he covers very completely all matters of style and technique, from which a few sentences have been chosen as a starting point for this composition, which is a homage to French music of all periods.

Advanced level of difficulty.The melody and harmonies date back to a tiny snippet of music I wrote many years ago as a brief nostalgic waltz (which formed an interlude in a longer work) and which I have now expanded in this piece, retaining the nostalgic mood. The title is the same as the two harpsichord work and is named in honour of one of Australia’s most spectacular and beautiful birds. Composed 2018

For two harpsichords and optional acoustic guitar, c.10'45. Advanced level of difficulty.The Suite is named in honour of one of Australia’s most spectacular and beautiful birds. In the first of four sections, a ‘whimsical andantino’. In the second section the interjections from Harpsichord. Two are stylised snatches of birdsong. Next there is a Tango. The last section consists of adaptation of my mandolin piece Fandangofor mandolins - a transfer of music written for one type of plucked instrument (the mandolin) to another (the harpsichord). Composed 2015
