Happy Occasion Overture (orchestral)
By Miriam Hyde
Regular price
$250.00
For Orchestra, c.4'30
Happy Occasion Overture was conceived in a spirit of recreation and aims at giving all the players a "say", while avoiding unnecessary complexities of technique and ensemble.
It is built on three subjects; the first a spirited call to attention, the second a more expressive oboe phrase, and the third a bolder, striding tune given principally to the strings, in a more serious minor mood. This returns jubilantly, towards the end, in the tonic major, and is rounded-off by a last reference to the rhythmic beat of the opening theme, broadening to the final cadence.

Heroic Elegy
By Miriam Hyde
Regular price
$250.00
For Orchestra, c.8'30-9'00
The Heroic Elegy is so called because it was written for a friend whose husband, a distinguished Major-General, was killed in a London accident in 1933. It has, in parts, a military suggestion recalling his career. There is a trumpet call, reminiscent of the battlefield, which emerges early in the score after an announcement in unison by four horns above tremolando strings. Quieter interludes in E and F major (in the latter case a flute solo with harp and strings) give a suggestion of hope, or pleading for recovery, but this is swept away by a re-statement in F minor, marked tragicamente, and grief becomes intense.

Chamber music, c7' 50. Advanced
In the words of the composer; "Having visited monasteries from famous Meteora in Greece poised, to escape hundreds of years of marauding hordes, on the top of a needle-point mountain hundreds of feet above the valley below, to Saint. Catherine’s monastery at the foot of Mount Sinai on the Arabian peninsula, built in the territory of, and protected by, the Bedouin, I can attest to the fact that this world remains intact within the Monastery’s walls. Illawarra Music
By John Peterson
Regular price
$300.00
Three movements for orchestra, c.16'30.
The central section of Illawarra Music was inspired by the presence of the Pacific Ocean and of Lake Illawarra. The music is a nocturne, associated with the visual image of the moonlight reflected in the waters, and of the night-time gradually becoming day as the sun rises - very quiet at the beginning scored only for harp, piano and keyboard percussion, and gently ebbs and flows, making use of repetitive melodic cells that are grouped in five-bar phrases. As the music progresses, it continues to build, slowly but inexorably, adding more and more instruments to the texture, growing subtly louder and louder until it reaches a climax representing the full rays of the morning sun being reflected in the waters of the lake and the ocean.
