      Joyful Encounters

      By Stephen O'connell

      Regular price $200.00 Sale

      Concerto for saxophone and orchestra.

After many previous visits to this area this composition was written from 12-19 August 2018 in and around Illara, a sacred Aboriginal Site in the western desert region of Central Australia. It is owned by Luritja people and located on Tempe Downs Station, south west of Alice Springs in the West MacDonnell Ranges.

There was lot of water around that year and the land was looking better than I’d ever seen it. We had been told that there had been a big cull of feral animals such as cattle, brumbies and camels.

There were thousands of birds, including the usual suspects such as zebra and bull finches, pied butcher birds, eagles and magpies. Curiously, I didn’t spot any crested pigeons until seeing a flock of them at the abandoned station as we departed. Normally, they are everywhere.

This made a huge difference to the health of the land and profoundly influenced my writing.  SO'C

        Kelso Overture

        By Miriam Hyde

        Regular price $350.00 Sale

        For Orchestra, c.5'30

Scored for big orchestra, it opens jubilantly in D major with an upward-leaping 6th, and vigorous rhythmic drive. The same theme, modified in a more ardent melodic line, is soon heard at a high pitch on the cellos, with the appeal of a sustained string tune. This is the chief unifying material of the overture. Several secondary themes, however, make a conspicuous contribution.

La Belle Dame sans Merci - orchestral

        By Horace Keats

        Regular price $250.00 Sale

        Baritone and orchestra, c.9'30

This classic English poem, an expression of John Keats’ exploration of love and death, inspired Horace Keats to draw out the innate music from within the poetry using a rich baritone vocal part supported by an engaging orchestral accompaniment.

La Belle Dame sans Merci, words by John Keats poem, was originally set with the well known baritone Harold Williams in mind and in fact it was broadcast by him and the composer on several occasions over the ABC using the piano rehearsal score. It was also performed by the ABC Orchestra (now SSO).

          Land of Cruelty

          By Peter Mcnamara

          Regular price $175.00 Sale

For amplified, ring-modulated oboe soloist and orchestra

The works incorporates a form of real-time electronic processing to the soloist’s part known as ring-modulation.  This occurs when the amplified signal of the oboe soloist is multiplied together with a modulating frequency provided by an obligatodouble bass player, creating a harsh but vivid sonority reminiscent of the Australian landscape.

Land of Cruelty’s narrative is the depiction of harsh landscape transitions evident in our continent where an area can be densely covered in life one year, but completely dry and devoid of life the next.  The oboe soloist is the navigator of this journey and depicts the ‘voice of the land’, with much of its melodic material influenced by transcriptions of Australian Aboriginal melodies.  The pitches of one melody entitled Malayah (quoted at the opening and closing of the work) are multiplied together to create the various ring-modulated effects.  Each section of the work is defined by a ring-modulated sonority realised by the oboe soloist and double bass that is then re-synthesised by the orchestra before transitioning into a more harmonious sonority.  These orchestrated colours provide a sonic canvas, crafted and moulded over time, over which the oboe soloist is placed.

          Lyric

          By Miriam Hyde

          Regular price $250.00 Sale

For Orchestra with harp (opt. piano)

The Lyric conjure up the idyllic setting of the open air theatre - the long twilight, the pink tones of a softly-clouded sky deepening into grey, the last notes of birds among the trees, the smell of flowers and of grass, freshly turned up by the rows of green deck chairs, on one of which some child had left a daisy-chain hanging.

The orchestra required for such a conception is not vast, the emphasis being on harp, woodwind and strings, with a small complement of
          brass.
