A Ballet: Act I and Act II, c.90'
The ballet ‘Odon’ is a story about greed, power, ambition, love, treachery, courage and hope, all set in a medieval era. The ballet tells a story about the relationship of a king and queen set in medieval times that abuse their power. Their subjects feel neglected and abused by this monarchy which results in the birth of a new breed of ambitious people who use the masses to overthrow the monarchs. In the end, the usurpers are overthrown by other ambitious people for the same reasons. The underlying theme of the story revolves around the principle of that human behaviour does not really change, as we can see from the same happenings in our modern times.

The concerto is cast in a three movement, fast-slow-fast form, with the lyrical second giving way to dance-like third. In the late Romantic tradition, the melody and its developments are the prime source of interest and the driving forces in the progress of the work. Much of the dazzling technical work in the piano parts is over a held, or prolonged chord – a typical 19th century technique.

Piano Concerto No 2 in C# minor, c.25'00

In February 1934, Miriam Hyde had the inspiration for the opening bars of this concerto only one week after her performance of the No. 1 concerto with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, when she was a 21-years-old student at the Royal College of Music. It was completed in 1935, and she performed it later that year with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Constant Lambert.

Piano Concerto No. 1

This concerto for piano and orchestra was composed in 1991 and commissioned by Sally Mays, a well known Australian pianist from Melbourne who has spent most of her life in London. Included in the large orchestra is a bass clarinet (which imitates the sound of the didjeridu) and clapstick which are intended to give a tone colour that emphasises the aboriginal origin of the melodies used in the slow movement and last movement.
