Angie Contini

Angie Contini is an independent artist, musician and writer living on Gadigal land, Sydney, and co-curator of the micro arts organisation, The Salons. Completing her undergrad and postgrad studies in aesthetics at the University of Sydney, Angie holds a double BA in music and film studies (awarded first-class Honours and The University Medal 2013) and a PhD (2018). As an interdisciplinary artist, her practice spans performance, recording, exhibition, tutoring and project production.

Angie’s songwriting and instrumental composition work is stylistically open-ended, with influences ranging across jazz, blues, folk, experimental, early music and electronic music styles, with an enduring interest in intuitive improvisation. Angie commenced formal piano and theory studies at the age of 10, with Julianne Petterson. Many years later, at the University of Sydney, Angie studied with Associate Professor Winsome Evans OAM BEM, undertaking advanced theory and composition courses, and with Emeritus Professor Anne Boyd AM, who would become her supervisor for honours, and her auxiliary supervisor for her PhD.

In addition to a growing body of piano works, Angie has produced one EP and two full-length independent vocal albums. Songs from The Man with the Pears and Other Tales (2010) have been awarded finalist recognition in US Singer/Songwriter Awards and the International Songwriting Competition, enjoyed broadcast on international and local indie radio stations, and placement in online programs, compilation albums and multimedia exhibitions.

Angie’s music practice is also supported by her passion for the visual arts and creative writing. Her essays, artworks and poems are published in open-access journals, podcasts and anthologies. Recent interdisciplinary writing projects include the poetry and hand-cut collage work fierCe (Flying Islands, 2023) and the photographic-philosophy essay Becomings (Gothic Nature Journal, 2023). Most recently, as co-curator and collaborating artist for The Salons, Angie’s love for audiovisual media and monochrome photography has found expression in Poetry Sydney’s 2024 Vessels of Love: love in transmission program, which continues to enjoy further extension through such spaces as Eastside Radio’s Arts programs, Knox St Bar and The Rocks Discovery Museum.
