Gavin Lockley
Gavin Lockley began performing at an early age, singing the role of Gavroche in Cameron Mackintosh’s Les Miserables at the Theatre Royal, Sydney.
Subsequently Gavin studied under Dr Michael Halliwell at the NSW Conservatorium of Music as a baritone before winning the Foundation for Young Australians Centenary Scholarship, enabling him to undertake post-graduate study at Detmold Hochschule fur Musik, Germany.
Upon returning to Australia, Gavin completed a Master of Music at the Sydney Conservatorium majoring in the vocal works of composer Hanns Eisler. He accepted a place to read for his PhD at Magdalen College, Oxford in 2007 and in the same year wrote and recorded the Symphony of Australia for Sydney Symphony. In 2008 he completed and recorded his Ballads of the Bush and released both these works with ABC Classics in October 2009.
Gavin was appointed an Australia Day Ambassador in 2010 for composing and producing the Celebrate Australia concert at Sydney Domain which starred Yvonne Kenny and was conducted by Brett Weymark with the Rum Corps Orchestra and choir. He was also appointed an Ambassador for the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme in 2010.
Gavin has just completed his musical of Colleen McCullough’s convict story Morgan’s Run which will be recorded in September 2010.
