Sonia Sozio
Sonia Sozio was born in Wollongong, New South Wales. At a young age she fell in love with the beautiful sound of the piano. Drawn to the piano, she convinced her parents of her passion for music. She commenced piano lessons at the age of nine. Later, she studied piano with Phillida Green at the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music. She performed regularly and was awarded scholarships during her studies and received her Associate Diploma in Music (AMusA) in pianoforte in 2001.
In 2003, Sonia began teaching at the Wollongong Conservatorium while operating a private practice from her home. In 2004 she completed her Advanced Diploma in Music Performance with distinction from the Wollongong Conservatorium. She continued formal studies through the University of Southern Queensland while raising a young family, completing a Bachelor of Music with Distinction in 2010, majoring in performance and composition with a focus on Australian composers. In 2011, she completed a Graduate Diploma in Education. Sonia has taught music in both primary and secondary schools. Her responsibilities have included developing music Learning and Teaching Programs, performing as a Liturgy accompanist, Band and Choir Director, School Musical Producer, Entertainment and Concert organiser.
She continues to teach at the Wollongong Conservatorium and runs a small private practice from her home. Throughout her teaching she aims to develop piano technique, encourage creativity and foster a love of music in all her students.
Sonia has a passion for composition. She composes at the piano, embedding knowledge from her classical training and contemporary approaches to her compositions. She has a love for Australian music and understands the importance music plays in unlocking self-expression, intelligence and creativity in every composer, performer and listener.
