Peter Wilson
Peter Wilson is an Australian composer and pianist, currently residing in the UK. He has a diverse catalogue that encompasses solo and chamber works, film scores, dance collaborations, and theatre pieces.
His early works are characterised by highly-detailed and gestural writing, influenced by a former career as a ballet dancer. Since 2020, Peter’s work has broadened to incorporate ideas and sounds from a wide range of genres. Notable amongst these recent works are his commissions for piano. ‘Three Preludes’ (2020) has been championed by renowned pianist and pedagogue Glenn Riddle; ‘Piano Quintet’ (2020) was commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Society in London; and ‘Tarantella!’ (2021) was composed for The Australian Ballet.
Other musicians and artists with whom Peter has collaborated include Riot Ensemble, Royal Northern Sinfonia, Queensland Ballet, Ben Okri, Loré Lixenberg, Ensemble 360, Ligeti Quartet, and Norrbotten NEO.
For his theatre music, Peter is an ‘Offie’-nominated and Olivier Award-winning composer. He has worked on productions for a number of London’s prominent venues, including the Old Vic, National Theatre, Donmar Warehouse, Soho Theatre, The Pleasance, and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
As a dance pianist, Peter has played for The Australian Ballet, the Royal Ballet, Northern Ballet, and Matthew Bourne New Adventures. He has worked on classic and contemporary scores by composers including Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, Richard Rodney Bennett, Minkus, and Joby Talbot.
He has been described as “having a willingness to engage in small, strange details” - a diagnosis Peter quite enjoyed.
