Michael H Dixon

Born in New Zealand in 1961 Michael learnt piano with his grandmother and horn with his father. Michael held full-time positions in Australian including that of Principal Horn Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra (1987-2000), then Associate with the Queensland Orchestra (2001-2005). Michael’s freelance credits include Principal Horn OAO (2006-2020), Principal Horn Australian Brandenburg Orchestra on natural horn (from 2008) also guest principal with Australian Haydn Ensemble, Bach Akademie Australia, Canberra Bach Ensemble (all from 2023). Chamber music credits include his ensemble LOCANA, Notos Wind Quintet, Grevillea Ensemble, Omega Ensemble, CIFM.

Teaching is an important part of his work with schools in Sydney including Inaburra School,  ASCHAM, Wollongong Conservatorium of Music, ARCO YMS in NSW (2023, 2024). In 2011 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Creative Arts from the University of Wollongong after having previously been awarded an MPhil in composition from the University of Queensland and MMus in Musicology from Griffith University.

Composition is a significant part of his musical life. He has written for a variety of ensembles along with songs and percussion works. A considerable number of his compositions include intervals from the harmonic series, extended just intonation. His music is published by Wirripang Pty Ltd (www.australiancomposers.com.au). From 2017 Michael has been co-curating SydneyMicroFest celebrating microtonal music. A number of his works are available digitally on Tidal, YouTube and others.
