SATB choir unaccompanied, c.2'40

This piece is a choral adaptation of Walt Whitman's short poem "When I Heard The Learn'd Astronomer", first published in 1865 in the anthology "Drum-Taps". Whitman's poem expresses distaste for an astronomy lecture, and preference for a personal experience of the night sky. The mood of this composition moves from hymn-like solemnity to discomfort, resolving in quiet and reverent joy.
