Jack L. Stacey - Pianist, Organist and Composer
MA (Music), BMus (Hons Class I); University of New England, AU | AMusA (Piano), AMEB
Jack L. Stacey is a Ballarat-based musician and composer. Diagnosed as an autistic savant at the age of four, Jack relied heavily on music in his early childhood to be his primary means of communication and expression. This would go on to refine his understanding of the world around him as he developed his musical and compositional skills.
He began learning piano at the age of five and started composing in 2006. In 2008, Jack travelled to London for six weeks to receive specialised music tuition from Professor Adam Ockelford from Roehampton University, a world-renowned researcher in musical savants. Since then, Jack has continued to compose new works and has quickly matured in his skills. He was among several prize winners in the Australian Children’s Music Foundation Songwriting Competition. He performed and debuted his first substantial composition, ‘The Night’s Lullaby’, with the Ballarat Symphony Orchestra in 2010. In successive years, Jack participated in numerous APRA Tropscore competitions from 2012 to 2015 and was one of four finalists in Tropscore Junior in 2013.
Throughout his career, Jack continued to perform regularly and debut new compositions at the piano, while also composing in various styles, genres and ensembles. He completed his VCE Music studies and performed at the Top Class Sounds Concert in 2017. Jack had the honour of receiving the Margaret Schofield Scholarship for his original composition: ‘Nightfall’s Lament’, to help fund his university studies. At the University of New England, Australia, he completed his Bachelor of Music in 2020, achieving high academic standing and receiving the Cecil Hill Prize and the Jean M Oxley Memorial Scholarship. Jack also received his Honours First Class in 2021, then completed his Master of Arts (Music) in 2023, receiving an RRES Scholarship and Vice Chancellor’s Scholar Award.
As a composer, Jack naturally evokes a neo-romantic contemporary classical style across his compositions, from solo piano to full orchestra. He can create works of any genre and instrumentation. His works explore the depths and heights of human expression, weaving narrative soundscapes that bridge musical language with emotional meaning.
Jack is currently the pipe organist of St Paul’s Anglican Church, Bakery Hill, VIC, Australia. He continues to study Classical Piano repertoire under the tutelage of Dr Mikhail Solovei and Pipe Organ while continuing to perform and compose. As of November 2025, he is studying part-time for his Doctor of Philosophy (in Creative Practice) with UNE.
