Songs Without Words is a set of three short pieces composed in an unapologetically melodic and lyrical style. Through a range of stylistic observances and veiled quotations, they endeavour to reflect something of the lives and music of composer siblings Fanny and Felix Mendlessohn.

Triangle Music (cello)

The work’s opening theme clearly announces a commitment to the Lydian mode, and despite passing through a variety of tonal centres, the music never strays far from its modal beginnings. The title refers to the predominantly triple meter and the generally angular, unsettled character of the music.
