Robin Thomson

Robin Thomson was born in Scotland and raised in Singapore before completing his secondary education in Perth, Western Australia. He began playing guitar as a teenager and initially developed an interest in contemporary music before undertaking formal studies in classical guitar.
In 1980, he successfully auditioned for the Conservatorium of Music within the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts, studying classical guitar with bass viol as a second study. In 1985, after five years of study, he became the first guitarist in Western Australia to graduate with a Diploma of Music Teaching.
Following graduation, Robin established a private teaching practice in Perth before relocating to the south coast of Western Australia. Over the following decades he worked as a teacher, performer, arranger and accompanist, contributing to musical life throughout the region. His performing activities encompassed both classical and contemporary styles.
Robin began composing in the late 1990s. In 2009 he shifted his primary focus from guitar to piano, finding the instrument particularly suited to the exploration and development of new compositional ideas. His works include music for solo piano and guitar, chamber ensembles, guitar ensembles and a variety of instrumental combinations.
In December 2024, his composition Please, Please Rain!!! was awarded First Prize in the inaugural Duncan Gardiner Memorial Guitar Ensemble Composition Competition.
In 2025 he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Music specialising in Composition, Instrumental Teaching and Performance through the Australian Guild of Education.
Robin lives in Denmark, Western Australia, where he continues to compose, arrange, perform and produce music. He is the founder of the Denmark Pop Up Piano project, a community initiative that promotes participation in music with the installation of a public piano in the town center.
