Robin Thomson

Robin Thomson is an Australian composer, educator, pianist and guitarist whose music reflects a lifelong commitment to inspiring creativity through performance, teaching and composition. His works are characterised by lyrical writing, imaginative storytelling and a strong connection to the Australian landscape, seeking to create music that is both artistically rewarding and genuinely enjoyable to perform.
Born in Scotland and raised in Singapore, Robin completed his secondary education in Perth, Western Australia. He studied classical guitar at the Conservatorium of Music within the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, with bass viol as his second study, graduating in 1985 as the first guitarist in Western Australia to receive a Diploma of Music Teaching.
Over the following four decades he established a diverse career as a performer,  teacher, arranger and accompanist. Alongside many years of private music teaching, he also spent twenty years lecturing in Information Technology and Business at TAFE. Throughout his career he has believed that performing, teaching and composing are complementary pursuits, each enriching the others and shaping his understanding of music.
Robin began composing in 1999. His years as an educator profoundly influenced his creative voice, inspiring music that challenges performers while remaining engaging, expressive and accessible. In 2009 he shifted his primary compositional focus from guitar to piano, finding the instrument particularly suited to exploring and developing new ideas. His catalogue includes works for piano, guitar, chamber ensembles, guitar ensembles and a wide variety of contemporary styles, reflecting a continuing curiosity and willingness to explore new musical ideas.
His composition Please, Please Rain! was awarded First Prize in the inaugural Duncan Gardiner Memorial Guitar Ensemble Composition Competition in 2024, and in 2025 he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Music specialising in Composition, Instrumental Teaching and Performance through the Australian Guild of
Education.
Robin lives in Denmark, Western Australia, where he continues to compose, arrange, perform and produce music. He is also the founder of the Denmark Pop-Up Piano project, a community initiative that encourages people of all ages and abilities to experience the joy of making music through the installation of a public piano in
the town centre.
Robin's work is guided by a simple belief: that music has the power to enrich lives, strengthen communities and inspire creativity at every stage of life. Whether teaching,  that people not only admire, but genuinely enjoy making.
