Romano Crivici

Romano Crivici, a former member of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the New England String Quartet (violin) has also worked widely as a pianist, repetiteur and conductor. He views art and culture through the lens of Anthropology which he studied at the University of Sydney, but is driven by, and gives way to the primacy of emotion and beauty over and above theoretical or academic considerations in his creative work.
As artistic director, he founded the Elektra String Quartet which, working with cutting edge sound technologies within many cross-cultural artforms gave voice to his musical visions. In that role he commissioned and had performed works by many Australian composers. Moving beyond the already expanded confines of the traditional string quartet medium, he formed the Elektra Collektive Unconscious, a disciplined and flexible ensemble of classical /jazz crossover artists which, incorporating text, improvisation and electronics, he directs from the keyboard. Apart from the occasional performance project, he now works as a fulltime composer.
He has three albums with the ABC Classic label, as well as others with No Self Records (link) and his work is regularly broadcast, both nationally and internationally.
He has worked as a teacher, as well as conductor with many youth ensembles, for whom he has composed extensively. (See list attached below) His work has been performed in the UK, France, Nederlands, Belgium, Denmark, Switzerland and South America. He holds a Masters in Music (Conducting) and a Diploma in Social Science, (Anthropology) both from the University of Sydney.
