A Dialogue for violin and chamber orchestra c.10'00

The concept of this works was to marry something of the lyricism and the sonorities of Celtic folk music with the forces and language of a contemporary classical chamber orchestra. Sounds and techniques of fiddle playing are referenced, such as the style of ornamentation shared by fiddle, flute and pipe of contemporary and historical folk practice.

By Peter Rankine

Flute solo, c.3'00.  Grade A.Mus

This music falls into two sections. In des Oiseaux, fantastic birdcalls provide the thematic material and something of the dramatic character of the music, while la Danse is a short, ecstatic dance of high energy and constantly changing metres.

Eulogy

By Peter Rankine

Regular price $100.00 Sale

Three movements for Wind Quintet - piccolo/flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon c.15'00

Eulogy seeks to embrace, celebrate and pay tribute to the voicings in the ensemble (including some piquant octave and double-octave passages) are a tribute to Stravinsky, who seemed to invent wind instruments, such was the depth and novelty of his idiosyncratic writing. Bartok and Lutoslawski often reinterpreted Baroque and Classical forms and techniques, and similar ambitions are expressed in the first two movements of the work. While the third movement is inspired by Messiaen's bird call.

From Fire by Fire

By Peter Rankine

Regular price $60.00 Sale

Quartet for mixed ensemble - flute, violin, horn, cello, c.18'00

The work takes its title from a lyric of Little Gidding, in T.S. Eliot’s Four Quartets. This poem inspired and nourished the composer during the creation of the work. It did this because it speaks eloquently of the creative process itself: tumult; achievement and loss; and mystery. And it did so because the exploration of Time and Eternity is evocative and compelling and seems to address the heart of the mystery of being. To find a musical representation of this interplay and co-existence between “the timeless and time” was a principal inspiration for this work.

Reflèts de la Mer

By Peter Rankine

Regular price $10.00 Sale

Flute solo, c.5'00.  Grade 8

Reflèts (reflections) are manifest in several ways: the piece is in three sections, slow-fast-slow, with material from the first section revisited in the third, thereby creating a rough symmetry about the centre; the principal melodies, especially in the slow movements, are turned more-or-less upside down, in the way of reflections in water (even rippley water such as the sea – la Mer).

Towards the Still Point

By Peter Rankine

Regular price $30.00 Sale

Clarinet in Bb and piano, c.9'00

T.S. Eliot’s, Four Quartets – passages of Burnt Norton in particular – inspired the music, which is an exploration of various experiences of time: muscular and corporeal in “The Dance” (Mvt I); “neither from nor towards”, “still yet moving” (Mvt II); and a centering towards “the still point (of the turning world)” – “only through time, time is conquered” (Mvt III).
