Cello
Changing Moods
By May Howlett
Regular price
$30.00
The expressive range of the cello is explored technically in light-hearted treatments of a variety of styles. From the sweeping bow for the rich tones required of the Etude; the sharpness of attack in the drama of the tango; and on to the more contemplative, abstract approach in the solo piece, Reflections on Siloam. Three movements:

Chinese Sonata (Russell Keats)
By Brennan Keats
Regular price
$25.00
Sonata for flute, cello and piano, c.5'30. Grade 6
Composed by Russell Keats for his friend, Gordon Watson, 1936. Edited by Brennan Keats 2020.
This is the only surviving work of my brother Russell, the others lie with him at about 2000 feet in the ocean depths off Savo Island in his ship HMAS Canberra (1). At the insistence of our mother he took his music on what was to become Canberra’s final departure from Sydney Harbour.
As students of the Conservatorium of NSW (now Sydney Conservatorium of Music) both Russell and Gordon Watson fell under the spell of Raymond Hanson.
This work reflects the times in China during 1936, the date of its composition. Civil war prevailed between the government of the Republic of China and The Chinese Communist Party. To the writer there is a sense of foreboding in the music with an ostinato piano line almost unchanging throughout the entire work. There may also have been murmurings of Japan’s invasion of China in the year to follow that have crept into the work.

By Natasha Trinkle
Regular price
$20.00
Cello and piano, c.4'45. Grade AMus
Devils at Dusk begins and ends with improvised sections in which the cellist is encouraged to create a soundscape depicting either Tasmanian Devils or an Australian bush setting. Published under the Wirripang New Composition scheme.
Natasha Trinkle is a freelance cellist and cello teacher living in Melbourne. Her interests include the use of cello in traditional and folk music genres, as well as composition and Australian improvised music. Natasha began learning piano at the age of five and cello at the age of nine. Cello became her main focus and in 2000 she completed a Bachelor of Music at the Elder Conservatorium in Adelaide. Following this she began exploring the role of cello in various contexts, in particular Scottish folk music, jazz, and improvised music. It was this passion for improvising that prompted Natasha to complete Honours in cello performance at Monash University in 2015. During this time, she also began experimenting with composition, and with support from staff at Monash, Natasha was able to integrate improvisation and composition into her Honours performance program. In November 2015, Natasha Trinkle won first prize for Devils at Dusk in the inaugural ANZCA composition competition at Monash University.

Fabulous Beasts
By John Peterson

The music is inspired by two mythical creatures: Chimera and Cerberus - composite creatures where their bodies are made up of different parts taken from different animals. In the first movement Chimera is constantly in conflict with itself - its movements and personality being pulled in different directions. In the second movement, Cerberus, being a more noble beast with three heads working together in order to become a much more efficient and fearful creature.
