An epigram is brief, pithy statement that amuses, surprises, is witty, sarcastic, or memorable in some way. Epigrams were originally inscribed on items placed in tombs and temples to curry favour with supernatural beings, or on a plaque to commemorate a person, place or event. Ancient epigrams were written in a poetic meter and intended to be read aloud, bearing an additional, performative aspect. Additionally, they were directed to the person reading them.
