Composition of Place, A

SATB and piano, c.3'30, advanced vocal and piano technique.

The words by Australian poet Jeremy Nelson evoke scenes of the countryside, and inclusion of phrases such as 'red, raked Buddhist garden' and the reference to English hay stacks add colour to the fact that we are 'passing through a Heysen painting.' The music follows the moods of the poem, at times marching with the words and sometimes interjecting with exuberant chords and rhythms. The middle section features voice parts floating over a harp-like pattern in the accompaniment leading to an invigorating finale. Composition date 1978.
