Conundrum

For Solo Clarinet, c.4'30.  Advanced grade 8 - Certificate

Firstly, its structure unfolds as a series of thoughts, as if the mind were turning an idea over, second-guessing itself, and trying to make sense of the puzzle. The performer is invited to interpret the conundrum from different perspectives. Extended clarinet techniques are used to heighten the colour, texture and tension of these shifting thoughts. 
Secondly, embedded within the structure of the piece lies a riddle, a hidden clue to the work’s inspiration. The number of sections, the scales used, the modulations, and other musical elements, all contribute to this concealed layer of meaning.
