Discussion amply illustrates Sutherland's traditional notion
('traditional' at least since the time of the late Haydn string quartets) that the string quartet genre is the appropriate vehicle for relatively dense or 'serious' musical discourse (rather than being of a more divertimento character as found in some of her other chamber works) and is also an example of Sutherland's relatively 'advanced', more dissonant
