Three Bush Birds
For soprano, flute, and piano, c.2'00. Professional
Haiku II (Three Bush Birds) is a continuous setting of three comic haiku by the Australian poet Robert Dickins. The three birds represented are the currawong, the kookaburra and the ibis, each one in a characteristic, comic situation. The currawong is cursed for disrupting the family barbeque. The kookaburra shares a joke with his bush colleagues. And the ibis is what an ibis is, that and no more—contrasted in the coda with the more delicate earthworm.
The instrumental parts are playful throughout—the flute and piano together evoking cacophony in the bush.
